The 100. [The 100 #1]

No one has set foot on Earth in centuries — until now.

Ever since a devastating nuclear war, humanity has lived on spaceships far above Earth’s radioactive surface. Now, one hundred juvenile delinquents — considered expendable by society — are being sent on a dangerous mission: to recolonize the planet. It could be their second chance at life…or it could be a suicide mission.

CLARKE was arrested for treason, though she’s haunted by the memory of what she really did. WELLS, the chancellor’s son, came to Earth for the girl he loves — but will she ever forgive him? Reckless BELLAMY fought his way onto the transport pod to protect his sister, the other half of the only pair of siblings in the universe. And GLASS managed to escape back onto the ship, only to find that life there is just as dangerous as she feared it would be on Earth.

Confronted with a savage land and haunted by secrets from their pasts, the hundred must fight to survive. They were never meant to be heroes, but they may be mankind’s last hope. Goodreads.

“Everyone was pointing upward at the sky, which was turning into a symphony of color. First, orange streaks appeared in the blue, like an oboe joining a flute, turning a solo into a duet. That harmony built into a crescendo of colors as yellow and then pink added their voices to the chorus. The sky darkened, throwing the array of colors into even sharper relief. The word sunset couldn’t possibly contain the meaning of the beauty above them, and for the millionth time since they’d landed, Wells found that the words they’d been taught to describe Earth paled in comparison to the real thing.”

What did I think about the book?

I heard a lot about this series, both on paper as on television. I heard the complete first book is the first episode. While reading it does feel like just one episode. This book contains so much detail, dialogue and descriptions the told time of this book is easily put into one episode. I don’t know for sure, I haven’t watched the series yet, first want to read a story before watching the tv series/movie.

I do love these kind of books. Angels & Demons was a big book, but the told time of it was 24 hours. The 100 is about a few weeks in the present, with flashbacks, like a lot of flashbacks – which are very important to the story though. Some parts of the book the told time was very extended, with a lot of dialogue, and sometimes you flew through time. It makes the story exciting, but it shows that not every day of a story has interesting parts. Just life real life.

I loved the dialogue here and the relationships/friendships between the characters. If you’d make a diagram with the connection relationships/friendships it would be a messy diagram lol.. The boyfriend of one is best friends with the girlfriend of another and so on and on… But it may be a messy diagram, but not a difficult one. I love how that diagram would be messy, why?, because life is messy and it makes it realistic. In real life we have those complicated diagrams of relationships/friendships/family.

Apart from the storyline and build up – which I like, but are not the most important thing here I believe – I’m amazed of the world building. The spaceships are made so clear in description, it’s like you walk around next to the characters. But how the characters experience Earth is amazing. They feel high on walking through the woods, are astonished by the sunset and amazed by what lives on earth, flora and fauna. It’s lovely to see how amazing a walk through the forest can be for someone. It must be difficult to describe how people feel when seeing Earth for the first time, as we’ve lived on it for our entire lives. [Unless you have secrets and know how to live in space???????]

I’m curious for the next book, to see how the people on the spaceships react to the 100 [minus a few] living on earth. How Arcada and Walden fare after the taken measures. How Bellamy and Octavia fare on their own. What they discover about the vineyard. How will the others survive on Earth together, what will they find?

In case you’ve missed these:

    1. I heard the first book is like the first episode or so. Felt like it could be put into one ep. Like I said in my review, but it doesn’t make the book any less interesting. It makes is more interesting is what I think of it. If you’ve got that info and imagine this all into about 43 minutes… 🤔😅
