Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse—Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena—Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods. “Hades raised an eyebrow. When he sat forward in his throne, shadowy faces appeared in the folds of his black robes, faces of torment,as if the garment was stitched of trapped souls from the Fields of Punishment, trying to get out. The ADHD part of me wondered, off-task, whether the rest of his clothes were made the same way. What horrible things would you have to do in your life to get woven into Hades’ underwear?”
What did I think of the book? [SPOILERS]
I really, really liked this book. First of all, I love mythology and the ancient Greeks. But what an exciting story this is. It starts with a boy called Percy Jackson. He is sent away to boarding schools because he’s a ‘troubled kid’. His mom is his world, but his stepfather is his hell. He thinks. His stepfather smells, only drinks beer with his friend while playing poker and mistreats Percy’s mother. Percy doesn’t understand why his mom married this smelly asshole…
But his stepdad is the least of his problems. He flunks at school, fights a Fury at a school trip, is called crazy and hallucinating because nobody remembers Ms. Dodds – the Fury – and gets expelled for ‘fighting’ with his bully, again… Next to all of this he has ADHD and Dyslexia… What a life that is… His Latin teacher is the only teacher in school caring for Percy Jackson and wanting him to pass his Latin exams at the top of the class. But after the so-called incident nobody remembers, because of the Mist – I’ll explain later -, he hears his best friend Grover Underwood talking to his Latin teacher . Percy sees a big shadow figure standing in the room and runs. But nog after hearing that Percy is in grave danger. He bails Grover on the way home and finds his mom.
They decide to take a road trip to the hut where they have been coming for years. They are excited to a weekend full of blue thing, blue waffles, blue candy, blue eggs. His mom has an obsession with blue, due to two reasons. Her husband saying food can’t be blue, and because of the father of Percy. But Grover finds them at the lake cabin and warns them. They make a run for it in the car of his stepfather. They race to Camp Half-Blood. Where a Minotaur attacks them and kind off vaporizes his mom. Grover, who is unconscious and therefore dragged, and Percy barely make it over the protected borders. Percy faints… But he’s left with a piece of horn of the defeated Minotaur in his hands.
This is where the fun in the story begins. Welcome to Camp Half-Blood!! Where you share the camp with about a 100 other half-bloods, children of a human parent and a Greek God[ess]. Where your Latin teacher is Chiron the centaur, your best friend Grover is a satyr with big dreams and you offer a piece of your food everyday into the fire to honor your parent, the God[ess]-one. Oh, and your camp director invites you to play Pinochle with him, despises you and is there because of his punishment by the other gods. Yes, he is Mr. D – or as we call him, Dionysus, God of the wine, who is forbidden to drink any wine, and other alcohol as a matter of fact. And of course, let’s not forget, the beautiful blonde girl. Who turns out to be Annabeth Chase, the wise, stubborn daughter of Athena who thinks Percy is kind off an idiot and call him ‘seaweed brain’.
Percy learns to fight, climbs lava spouting walls and plays capture the flag. When he defend the border and gets bothered by the Ares’ children led by Clarisse, the biggest, strongest and baddest of Ares’ kids. Once he defeats Clarisse and her 4 half-brothers and sisters, another surprise is waiting for him and the rest of the camp. Another monster from the Underworld, but inside the camp. Someone has summoned it, they do not know who it was yet. With all he has, Percy defeats it, but is wounded. Because the water gave him strength and healed him, Annabeth ordered him back into the stream. She saw what the water did to Percy. Chiron’s suspicions are true, Percy is claimed by his father. Poseidon, Gods of the seas, shows a Trident above Percy’s head. So there is the reason for the ‘seaweed brain’.
A son of one of the Big Three. Proof that the promise of the Styx – made after World War II, because children of the Big Three are too strong, WWII as evidence. The Big Three promised no more children because of it. – was broken. There already was trouble between the Gods on Olympus, but now it’s war. Zeus’ Master Bolt was stolen, he suspects Poseidon and after the claiming of Perseus [Percy] he thinks Poseidon ordered his son to do it. The hunt for Percy Jackson was opened – it already was, but now Percy understands why. Only one thing is left to do for Percy: retrieve the Master Bolt and stop the Gods from fighting and save the world. Piece of cake right? They themselves suspect the Master Bolt could only be taken by Hades, to start the war between his brothers.
His friend Grover and Annabeth join his quest to enter the Underworld. Which is in Los Angeles. Easy to go to from New York state. If he could only fly, but the airspace is Zeus’ terrain. A son of Poseidon wouldn’t dare to travel by air. So they have to take the long and hard way. A road full of more monsters, big challenges and weird people.
This book is absolutely amazing. I won’t tell the story any further, go read it yourself!! Rick Riordan has a brilliant way of bringing mythology back to life. I already review Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer, which was about Norse mythology, this series is about Greek mythology. It’s absolutely perfect. He reimagined the Gods to this time, modernised but with their core personalities and quirks. He did his research real good, not only on the Greek Gods, but also on the myths themselves and the buildings from that era.
His writing style is fast-paced, funny and full of information. The story learns you things in a sneaky way you enjoy from beginning to end. You’ll laugh your ass off, sit on the edge of your chair with excitement and thrills and you feel what the characters feel. Rick did an amazing job on all those points. Furthermore the monsters were incredible and so visually described it was scary^^
Percy Jackson is a character whom you must love. He’s a special kid, from a special bloodline, with special needs in regular life, but with special skills and gifts as well. Percy is someone you can’t hate. He is so human, wants to give up and is scared as shit a lot. But I can’t blame him. He finds out his dad is the Greek God of the sea, Poseidon, he is hunted by monsters from hell – yes literally hell, as in the Underworld of Hades, his uncle – and he has to stop a war between Greek Gods who could destroy the Western Civilization…. No pressure huh….?
Annabeth Chase is a character with wisdom, strategy, wit and comments. She defies that her mother Athena and Percy’s father Poseidon don’t come along and helps and protects Percy whenever she can. They become close friends, and they need each other and their characteristics.
Grover Underwood is Percy’s best friend and happens to be a Satyr. That means he’s half-human and half-goat, yes only his legs are the goat-part, okay and he bleats. He loves his pan flute, made for him by his dad. Only knows two tunes; Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 12 and Hillary Duff’s So Yesterday. He wants to be a licensed searcher to find Pan. He is scared as shit from being sent to the Underworld, but stands besides Percy no matter what.
Chiron was his Latin Teacher, but is actually a centaur. He normally puts his lower horse-body into a magical wheelchair. He is activity leader at Camp Half-Blood, trains the heroes and is afraid for Percy Jackson. Afraid of what the oracle foretold.
So all in all, I loved this book deeply and it will have a special place in my heart.
